Shujaa have been placed in a challenging Pool A, where they will face Australia, South Africa, and France.
Kenya Shujaa and the Lionesses players have every reason to smile after Safaricom, through its global brand M-PESA, announced a game-changing two-year sponsorship deal. The Ksh90 million deal was announced on Monday, 25 November.
This partnership aims to enhance the preparations of Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses as they head into the HSBC World Rugby Series and HSBC Challenger Series, respectively.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman Sasha Mutai expressed deep gratitude to Safaricom for reigniting their support, noting that the backing is crucial as the teams gear up for the international stage.
“We deeply appreciate this sponsorship after such a long hiatus. This support will significantly boost our preparations and ensure smooth facilitation for the players,” Mutai said.
The former KRU Vice Chairman elaborated on Shujaa’s ambitious plans for the upcoming HSBC World Rugby 7s Series. The team is returning to the global stage after a year away.
“Our goal is to secure a top-eight finish in the HSBC World Rugby Series and avoid relegation. With this support, we are confident we can achieve that goal,” he added.
Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer, Esther Waititu, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to fostering sports development in the country.
“We are passionate about growing sports from the grassroots level. This sponsorship will cover player salaries, health insurance, and even financial literacy workshops to ensure athletes are equipped to manage their earnings wisely,” she said.
The event was also attended by the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy, and Sports, Kipchumba Murkomen, who praised the KRU for securing private-sector support instead of relying solely on government funding. He further challenged players to deliver on the pitch now that resources are in place. “The ministry remains committed to fully supporting the KRU,” he noted.
The CS also commended Safaricom for its inclusivity, particularly its equal support for women in sports. “Thank you, Safaricom, for treating women athletes equally, without discrimination,” he added.
This monumental partnership is set to reshape the trajectory of Kenyan rugby, providing the resources needed to compete on the global stage.
Shujaa is set to depart from the country on Monday, 25 November, for the opening two legs of the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series. The Dubai 7s is scheduled for Saturday, 30 November, to Sunday, 1 December, at the Sevens Stadium, while the Cape Town 7s is set for Saturday, 7 December, to Sunday, 8 December, in South Africa.
They have been placed in a challenging Pool A, where they will face Australia, South Africa, and France.
