A cup final will be enough for Oilers to clinch the overall title if second placed KCB win the last leg of the season.
Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru has exuded confidence that his team, who are currently at the top of the standings, can go all the way and clinch the overall 2022 National Sevens title as the Series heads to its last leg of the campaign set to be hosted at the Bull Ring Arena in Kakamega 16-17 July.
Weru’s charges flew to the top of the table for the first time this season after they won the Prinsloo 7s tournament held in Nakuru last weekend to open a four point gap over second placed KCB who sit on 90 points and are the defending 7s champions.

Following the win that marked the very first time Oilers managed to win a sevens tournament since their formation, Weru, a former Kenya 7s player, stated that the team could not have asked for a better motivator going into the season finale in Kakamega this weekend.
“The Prinsloo 7s win gives us a shot in the arm heading into the last outing of the season. The biggest task we had is to recover before we started reviewing and making preparations again. I believe, following our performance in Nakuru, we have a very good chance of going all the way and winning the Series,” the head coach told Mozzart Sport.

The head coach also lauded the side for finally breaking their jinx in cup finals as they beat Strathmore Leos 12-7 in that title decider to lift their first trophy after consecutive defeats in the Driftwood and Dala 7s finals.
“It was very proud moment for the Oilers fraternity. A lot of hard work had been put in preparation for that kind of stage. The boys were brilliant. They were hungry, played well and wanted to win and that is what made the difference compared to the last two finals that we lost in Mombasa and Kisumu,” the head coach said.
“I always tell the boys to learn from every defeat. But when you lose too much in the final, it becomes a mental block so I am glad we managed to overcome that barrier,” Weru added.
In Kakamega, Oilers are the first seeds and will battle alongside Masinde Muliro, Nondescripts and Vihiga Granites in Pool A. In Kakamega, a cup final will be enough for Oilers to clinch the overall title if KCB win the last leg of the season.
