Young Kenyan athlete, Mercy Chepkemoi has set her sights on a historic double at the upcoming World Under-20 Athletics Championships slated for Tuesday 27 to Saturday 31 August in Lima, Peru.
The budding star is brimming with confidence and determination, drawing inspiration from the illustrious career of triple Olympic champion, Faith Kipyegon.
Kipyegon won two medals during the Paris 2024 Olympics, claiming gold in her favourite 1,500m race and silver in the 5,000m race.
Chepkemoi's determination is further fueled by the recent triumphs of Beatrice Chebet who clinched gold medals in both the 5000m and 10,000m at the Olympics.
The youngster will be the only Kenyan to double the 5,000m and 3,000m races.
Chepkemoi, who recently completed a gruelling 14km long run in Karura Forest as part of her rigorous training regimen, expressed her unwavering belief in securing gold medals in both of her chosen events.
"Since I am motivated by world champion Faith Kipyegon, I want to bring medals. I am hoping that we shall win and we are training as a team ready to bring gold," she stated.
She further acknowledged the challenges of competing in two races but expressed confidence in her ability to balance long runs and speed work.
"Remember running two races is not easy. I have to do good long runs and speed work, which I have mastered very well," she added.
With a deep-rooted love for her country, Chepkemoi has made significant sacrifices, including leaving school, to represent Kenya on the global stage and promised to put her best foot forward.
"Once in Lima, I want to promise the country that I will do well and bring medals since I love this country so much. I left school to compete for the country which means I love this country," she declared.
Chepkemoi is a form three student at the Tiloa Secondary School in Nakuru County. She was confident that with faith and proper training, the team would perform well in the Peruvian city.
“I have hopes that we shall win and we are training as a team ready to bring gold,” she concluded.
