The World champion is planning to double at the Olympics trials
World 5000m champion Helen Obiri was the star attraction in 10,000m at the second Athletics Kenya (AK) second track and field meet held at Kasarani on March 12 and 13 as she held he own in the distance to win in 31:24.7.
In what was her first event since winning at the Kenya Defence Forces' (KDF) cross country held in January at the Moi Airbase, Obiri was her usual calm self in the 25-lap race and waited for the perfect time for her powerful finishing kick to finish ahead of Eva Cherono who came in second in 31:29.6.
Today’s selected results.

"I have not been active since competing in the KDF cross country and after getting back to training I needed to gauge how my body is responding to it. I chose to race in the longer 10,000m as that would also test my stamina. The weather was good, except for the wind and I had a tough lineup to compete against. Winning here is a good sign for me ahead of upcoming competitions," said Obiri.

The 5000m specialist says running 25 laps was no easy feat adding that she would be taking a break until the KDF championship slated for in May.
"It takes mental toughness and focus to transition from 5000m to 10,000m. That said, I intend to double at the Olympics trials and that will need serious preparations. For the next four months I will be working on speed and also running more laps so as to prepare well for what awaits in 10,000m," Obiri added.
