Stargirl Faith Kipyegon headlines loaded Diamond League meeting in Doha

She is chasing yet another DL title, having completed a hattrick of overall wins after her exploits in Zurich last September.

Reigning 1500m Wanda Diamond League (DL) champion Faith Kipyegon will headline the opening leg of series set for Friday 5 May in Doha,Qatar.

The two-time world and Olympic 1500m champion returns to Doha where she began her unbeaten 2022 season that saw her go on to win her second world title in Eugene and came very close to Genzebe Dibaba’s world record, setting the second fastest time in history in the 1500m by clocking 3:50:37 in the Monaco DL.

She is chasing yet another DL title, having completed a hattrick of overall wins after her exploits in Zurich last September.

This meeting marks the start of yet another season that will see Kipyegon look defend her title at the World Athletics Championships set for Budapest in August.

The return of Beatrice Chepkoech

Women’s steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech will be among the athletes competing in the steeplechase category in the season opener that is littered with talent.

Chepkoech has been in the cold for seven months, with her last competition being the DL meeting in Brussels in September 2022 but was off to a disappointing finish of 9:24:73. She will be keen to make a comeback.

She will be competing alongside Commonwealth Games champion Jackline Chepkoech, World Under-20 champion Faith Cherotich, and Doris Cherop all looking to get their seasons on the track off to a good start.

Winfred Yavi of Bahrain will also be a notable force in this year’s lineup. She will be opening her track season in Doha after two successful cross-country competitions that saw her finish in the podium bracket.

Another 2022 DL champion, unbeaten last season, is Moroccan steeplechase star Soufiane El Bakkhali.

The 2023 Wanda DL calendar includes a total of 15 meetings, starting with the event in Doha and concluding with the two-day final in Eugene on 16 and 17 September.
