Cheruiyot approaches the new season on the back of a mixed 2025 campaign, one that featured moments of promise but also narrow defeats against some of the world’s strongest fields

Olympic silver medallist Timothy Cheruiyot has set his sights on a statement 2026 season, declaring his intention to challenge for top honours at the Commonwealth Games, dominate the Diamond League circuit and make a strong push at the World Ultimate Championships.

The 30-year-old signalled that intent early on Saturday, 14 February at the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Tour, where he opened his campaign with a solid performance in the men’s 2km race.

Cheruiyot clocked 5:54 to finish third behind rising star Reynold Cheruiyot (5:52) and Daniel Munguti (5:54) after a sharp sprint finish that underlined both his fitness and competitive edge.

For an athlete rebuilding momentum after a demanding season, it was a measured but meaningful start.

I am happy with the results. It was a good start for me and a good opener to the season,” Cheruiyot said.

With the cross-country outing behind him, the former world champion has already shifted focus to the track, where he believes 2026 presents a genuine opportunity to reassert himself on the global stage.

I expect good things in 2026. We have the Commonwealth Games, Diamond Leagues and the Ultimate Championships,” he noted.

Cheruiyot approaches the new season on the back of a mixed 2025 campaign, one that featured moments of promise but also narrow defeats against some of the world’s strongest fields.

He began his international season at the Grand Slam Track, finishing sixth in the 1,500m (3:35.61) and eighth in the 800m (1:47.12), before sharpening up for the Diamond League series.

In Rome, he came within three hundredths of victory, clocking 3:29.75 to place second behind France’s Azeddine Habz (3:29.72) in one of the tightest finishes of the season.

He followed that with a fourth-place finish in the Mile in Oslo (3:49.06) and a seventh-place result at the Prefontaine Classic (3:47.71), both competitive runs in elite company.

Cheruiyot closed his Diamond League campaign strongly, taking second place in Silesia (3:33.35) before finishing fourth at the Zurich final (3:30.13), both over 1,500m

At the World Athletics Championships in September, he once again represented Kenya with distinction, finishing fourth in 3:34.50 in a race decided by fractions of a second.

Portugal’s Isaac Nader (3:34.10), Britain’s Jake Wightman (3:34.13) and Reynold (3:34.25) claimed the podium spots, leaving Cheruiyot just outside the medals.

Now, in what could become a defining chapter of his career, Cheruiyot is weighing up a transition to the 5,000m.

Having spent over a decade as one of the world’s premier 1,500m runners, he believes testing himself over the longer distance could open new possibilities.

“Because I have been in the 1,500m for a long time, maybe this year I will try to test my legs on the 5,000m to see how it will go,” he said.

The timing and venue of his 5,000m debut are yet to be confirmed.

“I hope soon I will know the venue where I will make my 5,000m debut. I am still waiting for my management to work things out,” he added.

Regardless of what 2026 brings, Cheruiyot’s place in Kenya’s middle-distance history is already assured.

At the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, he claimed silver in 3:29.01 behind Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3:28.32).

His World Championships journey began with silver in London 2017 (3:33.99) behind compatriot Elijah Manangoi (3:33.61), before he upgraded to gold in Doha 2019 with a commanding 3:29.26 performance.

His résumé also includes five Diamond League final titles (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021), Commonwealth Games silver medals in Gold Coast (2018) and Birmingham (2022), and African Championships silver medals in Durban (2016) and Nigeria (2018).
