The 2015 World Champion, who has been steadily rebuilding his form, was all smiles after the throw that reaffirmed his resurgence on the global stage.
Yego’s qualification comes just a month after another breakthrough moment at the Silesia Diamond League on August 16, where he produced 83.60m on his third and final attempt to clinch his first Diamond League win in nine years.
His last victory at that level had come at the 2016 Prefontaine Classic in Oregon.
With the automatic qualifying mark set at 84.50m, Yego, who was making his seventh global championship appearance, sailed past the barrier, drawing loud cheers from fans.
Germany’s Julian Weber topped the qualification rounds with an impressive 87.21m, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner threw a personal best of 85.67m to also advance.
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India joined the final lineup after a strong 84.85m throw.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters provided one of the biggest talking points of the evening.
The two-time world champion started slowly, narrowly missing the standard with an 84.44m effort, just six centimeters shy of automatic qualification.
But he roared back in style on his second attempt, producing a massive 89.53m throw to top the qualifying ranks and send a strong warning to his rivals.
