Sebastien Haller will miss the World Cup after Emerse Fae turned to youth and pace, with Ange-Yoan Bonny and Elye Wahi handed surprise spots in the Elephants' WC squad
There was no room for sentiment in the Ivory Coast national football team's World Cup squad announcement, and Emerse Fae made that crystal clear with one ruthless decision.
The biggest hero of the Elephants' unforgettable 2023 Africa Cup of Nations triumph has been left at home.
Sebastien Haller, the striker who delivered the goals that carried Ivory Coast to AFCON glory on home soil, was omitted from Fae's final 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup after weeks of growing uncertainty over his place.

It is a brutal fall for a player who, barely a year ago, was celebrated as a national icon. Haller himself appeared to sense what was coming. Speaking before the squad announcement, the former Borussia Dortmund striker admitted missing the World Cup would rank among the greatest disappointments of his career.
"Participating in a World Cup is a dream that became a goal," he said. "If I'm not selected, it will be one of the biggest disappointments of my career."
In the end, Fae chose evolution over loyalty.

The Ivory Coast coach has gone all-in on youth, pace and explosiveness in attack, handing opportunities to a new generation instead of relying on the experienced forward struggling for minutes at Utrecht. Among the headline inclusions is Ange-Yoan Bonny, the Inter striker who only recently received FIFA clearance to represent Ivory Coast after previously playing for France at a youth level.
There is also a surprise return for Elye Wahi, whose international future looked dead only months ago before a late-season resurgence convinced Fae to change his mind. The Elephants suddenly look loaded with unpredictable attacking talent.
Amad Diallo, Nicolas Pepe, Bazoumana Toure and Yan Diomande are all part of an aggressive, high-speed frontline built to hurt teams in transition. And while the door has not been slammed completely shut on Haller - he was named among five reserve players - the message from Fae could hardly be clearer: reputation alone guarantees nothing anymore.
The squad still carries experience and leadership through figures like Franck Kessie and Seko Fofana, while Evann Guessand was included despite fitness concerns. There was no place, however, for several familiar names. Wilfried Zaha, Jean-Philippe Krasso, Jeremie Boga and Vakoun Bayo were all overlooked as Fae doubled down on a squad designed for intensity rather than nostalgia.
Ivory Coast open their World Cup campaign against Equador in Philadelphia on June 14 before facing Germany and Curacao in Group E. And one thing is already certain - Fae has gambled big before a ball has even been kicked.
