The red and whites will be competing in the EFL Championship

Black Cats make one step back to the Premier League after ending their four-year stay in the English third tier with a 2-0 Play-off final win over Wycombe Wanderers. The deserved win at Wembley Stadium takes the Black Cats to the Championship as the club aims to get back onto the path of former glory.

Elliot Embleton and Ross Stewart struck in either half for Alex Neil's side to get the job done, as over 46,000 Sunderland fans basked in the glory in the London sunshine after a season of incredible, avid support.

It took Sunderland too much time to return to the Championship after suffering back-to-back relegations in 2017 and 2018. The Black Cats went from being a stable Premier League club to third-tier dwellers in just over a year.

Ownership changes, financial problems, and poor coaching appointments all led to one of the best-supported clubs in England wasting time far away from the country's strongest division.

Even though they now face an even harder fight to make the step up to the Premier League, loyal Sunderland fans can now at least say that their club is moving in the right direction.

There will be Championship football at the Stadium of Light next season! The red and whites from the northeast of England join Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United, who secured automatic promotion after finishing the season in the top two places.
