Arsenal are one win away from the title!
Reading Time: 3min | Mon. 18.05.26. | 23:59
A very nervy 1-0 victory over relegated Burnley means they will be champions with a win in the last round
It was anticipated before the game that Arsenal will not only defeat Burnley, but that the Gunners will do it with a few goals in the net, adding to their goal difference score, which could (in theory) be of use on the last game of the season. And that feeling was even higher when the packed Emirates saw the starting line-up, with the front five of Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard all starting together for the first time this season. But when the game finished, it was a typical Arsenal win – 1-0 score after a corner kick.
The Gunners are now only 90 minutes from the long waited title and whatever happens tomorrow after the Bournemouth - Manchester City game, they still have total control of their destiny. If they win the title, it will be due to their ability to score from set-pieces. This was their 24th goal from a set piece this season in the Premier League. And their 18th from a corner. The scorer? Kai Havertz. The match winner from the Champions League final (with Chelsea) got a surprise start over Gyokeres and used it perfectly. To be fair, he should have got the red card later on for reckless challenge, but was ‘saved’ by the referee. It was a shaky performance from Arsenal who were a much better team, but had trouble creating more chances as Burnley decided to sit deep. Trossard, Saka and Eze missed their chances and the last half an hour it was just a matter of saving the 1-0 score. For the title, the Gunners will have to play much batter against Crystal Palace.
Arsenal took command (as expected) from the first minute but it took them 15 minutes to make the first big chance. Trossard blasted from distance but the ball hit the post. The next big thing was the penalty claim in the 34th minute, when Pires made a contact with Saka but the referee decided it was too soft and didn’t give a penalty, which VAR confirmed also. And then finally in the 38th minute Kai Haverzt (who else) scored the goal. It was a corner (again) and the German international jumped higher than anyone else and put the ball into the net. Saka nearly doubled the lead in the 44th minute with his trademark volley shot which went inches from the right post.
Eze was the next one to miss not one, but two chances at the start of the second half. Mosquera's cross was met by Eze's volley, but the ball first hit the ground and then went over the crossbar in the 54th minute. Former Crystal Palace forward had even better opportunity later on, but his header was poor. From than moment on, tension took over as Arsenal players realized that the second goal won’t be coming that easy (or wont be coming at all) and they became nervous. Havertz was lucky to avoid a perfectly justified red card after a bad challenge on Ugochukwu, and instead was given just a yellow card. Arteta changed him quickly with Gyokeres, but the Swedish striker didn’t create a single chance. Now it all comes down to the last round.
