Arteta turns into Cherries' biggest fan as Arsenal push City to the edge

The Gunners handled their business against Burnley, but now Mikel Arteta is counting on Andoni Iraola's fearless Bournemouth to derail Manchester City

Arsenal did their part. Now, all eyes turn to Manchester City.

The Gunners edged past Burnley 1-0 on Monday night to keep the Premier League title race dramatic, meaning Pep Guardiola's side must beat Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium tonight (9.30 pm) if they want to stay in control of their destiny heading into the final weekend.

And while City still hold the advantage, Mikel Arteta is openly hoping Bournemouth can deliver Arsenal one final favour.

The Cherries are far from pushovers. Andoni Iraola's side is still dreaming of an unlikely Champions League place, turning what could have been a routine night for City into one of the most dangerous fixtures left on the calendar.

Arteta certainly knows it.

"I'll be Bournemouth's biggest fan ever tonight," the Arsenal boss admitted after the win over Burnley. "I think everyone connected to Arsenal will support them because we know what it could mean for us. We've done our job, and now there's one game left - unless something beautiful happens in Bournemouth."

A draw at the Vitality would be enough to send Arsenal into the final round with the title in their own hands before travelling to Crystal Palace, while City would host Aston Villa under immense pressure.

Despite the obvious stakes, Arteta insisted there is no need to contact Iraola ahead of the match.

"I honestly don't think he needs any advice from me," the Spaniard said. "What he's done at Bournemouth is incredible. The transformation of that team and the fact they're fighting for a Champions League spot says everything."

Arteta also pointed to Burnley's spirited display against Arsenal as proof that nothing can be taken for granted at this stage of the season.

"When you see the intensity and passion Burnley showed against us, just imagine how Bournemouth will approach this game," he added.

The Gunners' victory over Burnley was another tense, hard-fought performance, eventually settled by a set-piece - an increasingly familiar story for the north London club this season.

"I knew it would be difficult," Arteta explained. "In the first half, we probably played some of our best football of the season and could have scored two or three. But, defensively, we had to stay concentrated until the very end. The desire the players showed, the way they work for each other - it was phenomenal. Everyone has contributed to getting us into this position."

Captain Martin Odegaard also refused to hide Arsenal's belief that the season could still end in glory.

"I'm really proud of what we've done so far," the Norwegian said. "There's still one huge league game left, and then the Champions League final. We want to bring both trophies home."
