Still, Barcelona are watching closely, eyeing Robert Lewandowski's successor...
Atletico Madrid are no longer interested in rumours. They've heard enough of them, watched them grow, multiply, take on a life of their own.
Now, they want to end them.
And the only way to do that is not with words, but with a statement strong enough to be understood across Europe: Julian Alvarez is not for sale.
According to Marca, they already know how to make that clear.
This Atletico side, shaped in the image of Diego Simeone, will have a shot at silverware in mid-April, when they face Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final. But when it comes to the biggest stages, the ones that define eras rather than seasons, the gap remains.
A decade without a Champions League semi-final. Five years since their last La Liga title. And this season, drifting too far behind Barcelona and Real Madrid to realistically close the distance.
So if they cannot yet compete with the very top in trophies, they will do it in another way, by holding on to what matters most.
Alvarez signed until 2030 when he arrived from Manchester City, and a €500 million release clause makes any direct move almost impossible. No club is simply walking in and taking him.
Behind the scenes, there is intent. A plan not just to keep Alvarez, but to tie him even closer to the project. To make him feel what numbers alone cannot guarantee.
If finalised, Alvarez would become the highest-paid player in the squad, with a salary reaching up to €10 million per year through fixed income and bonuses.
Meanwhile, Barcelona are watching closely, viewing Alvarez as a potential answer to a question that will soon define their attack - the eventual departure of Robert Lewandowski.
