Although he's publicly saying that he's only focused on Atletico Madrid, the Argentine forward has apparently indicated his wish to join the Catalans

Barcelona have spent months circling their ideal long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski - and now, their pursuit of Julian Alvarez is beginning to take real shape.

The Atletico Madrid forward has been at the centre of persistent transfer talk throughout the season, with Barca identifying him as the profile they want to lead the line in the years ahead. Until now, it has all felt speculative. Not anymore.

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona have already made initial contact - via intermediaries - to explore the conditions of a deal. Club president Joan Laporta is expected to take personal charge of negotiations with sporting director Mateu Alemany, fully aware that prising Alvarez away from a direct rival will be anything but straightforward.

Atletico's stance, publicly at least, remains unchanged. The message from Enrique Cerezo has been clear: Alvarez, tied to the club until 2030, is not for sale. And yet, beneath that firm position, the situation may be shifting.

Fresh reports claim that Alvarez has indicated a preference to make the move to Camp Nou - a development that, if confirmed, would significantly alter the dynamics of any potential negotiation.

Barcelona, for their part, are preparing an opening bid in the region of €70-75 million, potentially including a player to sweeten the deal. Ferran Torres has previously been mentioned as a possible makeweight, although Los Colchoneros' reluctance to lose one of their key attacking figures could complicate any swap structure.

Amid the noise, Alvarez himself has chosen a different approach: distance.

Speaking ahead of Atleti's Champions League clash with Arsenal, the Argentine made it clear he has little interest in engaging with speculation.

"I try not to dwell on it too much because something new comes out every week," he said. "I don't waste energy on that. I focus on what matters, helping the team."

It's a line he has held consistently. No denials, no confirmations, just a refusal to be drawn in. But notably, no firm commitment to staying either.

For now, Alvarez's attention remains on the pitch, with Atletico chasing a place in the Champions League final and aiming to make history. The transfer saga can wait.

Barcelona, however, are already moving.
