Among the standout honourees was Harambee Stars tactician Benni McCarthy, who received an Honour Cap in recognition of his immense contribution during his time at Ewood Park.

He was joined by English great Alan Shearer, showcasing the calibre of talent that has passed through the club’s ranks.

The night event paid tribute to seven former players in total, including Craig Short, Charlie Mulgrew, Craig Conway, Roger Jones, and Phil Jones.

For McCarthy, the recognition carried special weight. The former Bafana Bafana striker arrived at Blackburn in 2006 fresh from winning the UEFA Champions League in 2004 with FC Porto under the guidance of José Mourinho.

Carrying both pedigree and expectation, he wasted no time in making his mark, scoring on his debut and quickly establishing himself as a key attacking force.

His debut season, 2006/07, remains the highlight of his spell in Lancashire. McCarthy struck 24 goals in all competitions, including 18 in the Premier League, showcasing a ruthless edge in front of goal that made him a fan favourite.

By the time he left, he had amassed 52 goals in 141 appearances, numbers that cement his place among Blackburn’s most effective modern forwards.

Now a respected coach and currently in charge of the Kenya national football team, McCarthy’s presence at the gala served as a reminder of his enduring legacy.

Being honoured alongside Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer, further highlighted the elite company he keeps in Blackburn’s storied history.

The anniversary celebration was more than just a look back. It was a tribute to players who defined eras and carried the club’s identity onto the pitch. McCarthy’s name, etched firmly into that legacy, continues to shine as a symbol of excellence and consistency.

Since hanging up his boots, the 48-year-old has built a solid coaching résumé, with stints at Cape Town City and AmaZulu, as well as serving on the technical bench at Manchester United.

While currently leading Kenya, McCarthy has hinted at a desire to return to club management in the future, raising the intriguing possibility of one day making a comeback to Ewood Park in a different role.
