In an interview with CAFOnline at the club’s training base in Johannesburg, Onyango reflected on Sundowns’ upcoming first-leg tie against Morocco’s AS FAR on Sunday, 17 May at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria, where a strong turnout is expected.

The Ugandan international, part of the 2016 squad that lifted the continental title, said the atmosphere around the competition has improved significantly.

“I really need to give credit to the supporters who have recently shown love for African football. When you go to the North, fans there show passion for the Champions League and understand its importance,” he said.

Onyango believes clubs across the continent are now placing greater value on the tournament and what it represents.

“We took a bit too long to understand the value of the Champions League. Winning it brings recognition to the club,” he added.

He also pointed to the increasing ambition within African clubs and the role of investment in achieving success at this level.

“The mentality and ambition of clubs is key because it demands sacrifice and resources. Across Africa, clubs are beginning to realise this, and you can see it in the way stadiums are filling up,” he said.

Onyango added that continued commitment from club leadership will be essential for sustained success.

“I’m glad clubs now understand the importance of the Champions League. To compete and dominate, there must be proper investment in preparation,” he noted.
