Carrick's charge faces stubborn wall: Cherries stand between United and top three

Unbeaten Cherries, injury-hit defence and a long break ahead - a tricky Friday night at the Vitality for in-form United (11 pm)

Everything Michael Carrick has built since mid-January has been close to flawless - seven wins from nine, momentum restored, Champions League places within reach. But just when things look smooth, Manchester United hit a familiar stumbling block: AFC Bournemouth away.

The Vitality Stadium hasn't been kind to United lately. They haven't beaten the Cherries in their last five meetings, including that chaotic 4-4 draw at Old Trafford in December. The last win? Back in May 2023, under Erik ten Hag.

And this Bournemouth side is built to frustrate. Andoni Iraola's team are draw specialist - 14 already this season - and unbeaten in 10 matches. Not pretty, but extremely effective.

A big reason? Djordje Petrovic. The Serbian goalkeeper has been a wall, keeping three clean sheets in recent games and anchoring a side that refuses to break easily.

United, meanwhile, arrive with firepower. Bruno Fernandes is pulling the strings, but with some wobbles away from home (four points from the last nine on the road) and serious defensive concerns. Injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and others have left Carrick patching things up at the back, with De Ligt unlikely to return this season.

Still, the stakes are clear: win, and United surge to 57 points, tightening their grip on third and even closing in on Manchester City.

Then comes something quite unusual - a 23-day break. No Europe, no cups, just time… and pressure to keep the rhythm alive.

Carrick isn't looking too far ahead:

"You go game by game. You don't play for fourth or fifth. You play to win."

Across the dugout, Iraola knows exactly what's coming:

"They score easily, but their real improvement is defensively. They don't give you much."

Form meets resilience, while momentum meets resistance. At the Vitality, something has to give.
