Fresh from a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo in their opening match, Kenya is aiming to secure a second consecutive win, which would significantly boost their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals of the continental tournament.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated fixture, Onyango, who was named Man of the Match against DR Congo, emphasised the crucial role fans played in lifting the team during their opening game, and urged them to once again pack the stadium to the rafters and bring the same electrifying energy.
"We need the fans’ energy and support,” said the Gor Mahia midfielder. “They showed up on Sunday against DR Congo, and to be honest, they pushed us to the edge, which resulted in the win.
Today, I am urging them to come in their droves and support the team because we won’t disappoint them.”
Goalkeeper Bryne Omondi echoed the midfielder’s sentiments, highlighting the atmosphere created by the home crowd as a defining factor in Kenya’s spirited performance.
"The fans played a big role in that win,” he noted. “They inspired us to push harder, and that made a difference. We’re hoping for even louder support today.”
With tickets for Thursday’s clash already sold out, expectations are high that a full-capacity crowd at Kasarani will once again provide the twelfth man advantage for the Stars as they face an Angola side desperate to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat to Morocco.
The 2018 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Most Valuable Player (MVP) and graduate of Gor Mahia’s youth system was a standout performer in the opening match following his commanding display in the midfield.
His Man of the Match accolade, he said, is added motivation to maintain high standards in the tournament.
"Honestly, receiving the Man of the Match award in the first game of the tournament is a great motivation,” he said. “It reflects the work I’ve been putting in, and I’m focused on continuing that performance and achieving even more in the coming matches.”
Victory for Kenya this evening would take them to six points and place them firmly at the summit of Group A, a commanding position ahead of their remaining fixtures.
Harambee Stars are scheduled to face Morocco on Sunday 10, August before wrapping up the group stage campaign a week later against Zambia on Sunday 17, August with all the matches being staged at the Kasarani Stadium.
