An unbelievable situation unfolded in Switzerland — the celebration of a league title was spoiled by a heavy 8–3 defeat

It’s hard to imagine your team being torn apart 8–3 at home, a scoreline that would normally trigger a coaching crisis and weeks of fallout. Yet for FC Thun, it became little more than a footnote in a season that still ended in the biggest celebration in the club’s history.

Thun were the surprise story of Swiss football this year, storming to the league title right after returning to the top flight. It was widely seen as one of the country’s standout sporting achievements of the season.

But once the championship was mathematically secured, everything changed. Their form collapsed almost immediately, with five defeats in their final six matches, culminating in the heavy home loss to Young Boys. The match was particularly chaotic, as Thun finished with only nine players and were repeatedly exposed defensively by a ruthless opponent.

A team that had built its success on structure and consistency suddenly looked completely unrecognizable, as the season ended in a dramatic defensive meltdown.

Still, the broader context doesn’t disappear behind the embarrassment. Thun are Swiss champions for the first time, a landmark achievement that also brings qualification for European competition next season.

Now the question shifts from celebration to recovery: whether the squad can mentally reset after such a turbulent finish and carry their breakthrough momentum into Europe.

Interestingly, the team that delivered the blow, Young Boys, also had a disappointing domestic campaign by their own standards, making the result even more unusual in the context of their season.
