Defending champions Palmeiras will face Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores finals (23.00) to decide the best side of the continent

The holders remain on the throne or the previous champions return to it? We will get the answer tonight after the showdown between two Brazilian sides, Palmeiras and Flamengo, in the Copa Libertadores finals.

The game is scheduled for 23.00 at the legendary Centenario Stadium in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.

This will be the fourth all-Brazilian final of the South American championship, and the second such in a row. However wins it at Centenario tonight, it will be the eighth Brazilian title in the last 12 seasons.

Palmeiras will try to become the first reigning champion after 20 years to win it two consecutive times, while Flamengo will give their best to return to the throne.

Those two are both Brazilian greats. The latter are the most popular club in Rio de Janeiro and the whole of Brazil, while Palmeiras are one of the four clubs in the country with over 10,000,000 fans.

Although big, popular and trophy-winning, Flamengo and Palmeiras have never had such an important match in their history. They met twice in the finals of some less important state tournaments, while six more times they were opponents in the elimination phases of local cup competitions.

They last met at the opening of this season in the Brazilian Super Cup. Flamengo, as the champion of Brazil, and Palmeiras as the cup winner. It was 1-1 after the full time, and the winner was decided through a penalty shootout. Flamengo missed three, and Palmeiras four from the spot and the title went to the Rubro-Negro.
