Fernandez considered by Manchester City

The Chelsea captain is facing an uncertain time when season ends in May

In recent weeks, he has been trying through his statements to send signals toward Real Madrid, but in the end he could wind up in Manchester. Enzo Fernandez could become one of the protagonists of the June transfer window, as Manchester City also has him in its plans. Everything is still far from concrete—not just the deal itself, but even talks with the player. The Athletic reports that City’s interest in Fernandez is still in an early stage, as the club is considering several candidates for a new midfielder, including Elliot Anderson, who is their top target

Anderson himself would reportedly prefer a move from Nottingham Forest to the blue side of Manchester, but since Evangelos Marinakis has decided to make the 23-year-old one of the most expensive players in Premier League history, City are also exploring other options—among them the Argentine. The Athletic notes that City are, in a way, preparing for life after Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese recently confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season, and as that moment approaches, it’s becoming clear how difficult it will be to replace him—both because players of his profile are almost impossible to find on the market and because of his influence on the team.

Before that, City will have to resolve the situation of Rodri. The Spaniard has one year left on his contract and admitted during the international break that he couldn’t turn down an opportunity to play for Real Madrid. However, in the meantime, Pep Guardiola said he is optimistic about extending the contract of the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner. On the other hand, Fernandez is under contract with Chelsea FC until the June of 2032, but he himself sent inappropriate messages in March and openly flirted with Real Madrid, which led to a two-match suspension by the club. The Argentine has admirers at the Santiago Bernabeu, but The Athletic notes there are no indications that Madrid will try to sign him this June.

The former SL Benfica midfielder will certainly think carefully about his future after the upcoming World Cup, something his agent Javier Pastore also mentioned earlier this month. If he does not receive a pay rise, Fernandez could very easily leave Stamford Bridge this June.

We felt that, instead of renewing the contract under terms that wouldn’t satisfy the player, it was better to leave things as they are and focus on performances and results, because there are important goals until May—qualification for the Champions League. We decided to forget about it and focus 100% on key matches with Chelsea, as well as the World Cup with Argentina, which will require great concentration. We don’t want to get into discussions about numbers, contracts, and negotiations when the timing isn’t right. Our plan is to meet again with Chelsea after the World Cup and, if no agreement is reached, to explore other options” said Pastore. One of those options now appears to be Manchester City.
