The controversy, which has stirred widespread debate within local football circles, centres on claims that millions of shillings were irregularly disbursed under the guise of insurance procurement during the August 2025 tournament.

At the core of the matter is an alleged questionable payment of $328,735 (approximately Ksh42.4 million) to Riskwell Insurance Brokers Limited, a firm now under scrutiny.

Investigations into the transaction have raised concerns, with reports indicating that the company was not licensed as an insurance brokerage in 2025.

Further compounding the issue are revelations that Riskwell Insurance Brokers Limited was only registered in June 2025, with the payment reportedly processed on August 4, just two days after the tournament had already kicked off.

The controversy stems from the procurement of a mandatory $30 million civil liability cover required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), a critical condition for hosting the continental showpiece.

Responding to the allegations via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Hussein Mohammed noted that the claims were part of a calculated attempt to undermine ongoing reform efforts within the federation.

The FKF boss maintained that his push to streamline operations and eliminate corruption had inevitably provoked resistance.

“Once I started the process of cleaning house, it was inevitable that corruption would fight back. Through such a malicious campaign, a lifetime of sacrifice, dedication and investment to help develop our social fabric through sports can go up in smoke, just like that. Reputation ruined forever. I shall not allow it,” he stated.

The former Extreme Sports Limited CEO further pledged to issue a detailed response addressing what he termed as “heinous fabricated allegations” and “planned propaganda.”

“In this regard, I shall be issuing a comprehensive response to these heinous, fabricated allegations and all other planned propaganda. We know all their plans,” he added.

The unfolding saga arrives at a sensitive moment for Kenyan football, with the country gearing up to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside its East African neighbours, Tanzania and Uganda.

Scheduled to run from June 19 to July 18, the tournament represents a significant opportunity to showcase the region’s footballing and organisational capacity on the continental stage.
