Sofapaka’s relegation from the top tier was confirmed on Saturday after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Mathare United.

While many observers feel the drop had been coming after a series of narrow escapes in recent seasons, the club’s struggles have also been linked to financial challenges.

Rooted at the bottom of the table, Batoto ba Mungu managed just three wins all season.

As the reality of relegation sinks in, Situma, the 2009 KPL title-winning captain, has explained what he believes went wrong at the club.

Situma says the downfall has everything to do with the people President Elly Kalekwa trusted, claiming they ultimately let him down.

“I will be honest, all along, the Sofapaka boss has had dishonest people around him. He has goodwill and is an easy person. When you share an idea with him, he easily buys into it. The people he trusted let him down,” he said in an interview with Sporty FM.

He added that Kalekwa is a well-meaning leader who wants the team to grow, but was undermined by individuals acting in their own interest.

“He is a good guy who wants the team to grow, but those he trusted were in it for personal gain, and that has been a major undoing. It is sad that the team has gone down after 17 years,” he added.

However, the former Harambee Stars defender did not name the individuals responsible for the club's relegation.

Earlier, Situma, who also serves as the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA )President, expressed his disappointment at the relegation, describing it as a painful moment for him given his strong ties to the club.

“No words I have can ever express my feelings of anger and sadness that Sofapaka has finally gone down. This is a place that gave me an identity and the pain feels traumatic. Papa Elly Mboni Kalekwa remains my hero. He is the man who revolutionised the Kenyan Premier League,” he said.

“Two seasons in the National Super League and champions in our maiden year in the Premier League. 2009 was and remains historic for Batoto ba Mungu. 18 years ago, this club was born. It has grown through ups and downs and what I know about the chairman is that he cannot let his only child go down the drain.

Not now that it is on the floor. Through the struggles, hopes and dreams remain alive. Papa Elly, time to reflect, re-adjust, and restart. May God give you wisdom to guide your next move," wrote Situma.
