Roma coach has won the battle against Ranieri and Massara and will be calling the shots in the future
The Friedkin family have sided with Gian Piero Gasperini in an internal clash with Ricky Massara and Claudio Ranieri. The motivation behind the American owners’ decision lies in the fact that, during his nine years at Atalanta BC, Gasperini enabled the Percassi family to generate around 750 million euros in transfer profits. The Friedkins want Gasperini to replicate something similar in the Rome—delivering both sporting success and a return to the Champions League, while also generating profits through player development and sales.
Dan and Ryan Friedkin are set to arrive in Rome for a meeting with Gasperini, where the main topic will be the upcoming June transfer window. The coach is asking for five players, with two already identified: highly talented Alajbegović, owned by Bayer Leverkusen, and experienced Remo Freuler from Bologna FC 1909—one of Gasperini’s trusted players from his Atalanta days. Leverkusen have already made it clear that Alajbegović would cost between 25 and 30 million euros, while Freuler, given his age (34), could arrive on a free transfer as his contract with Bologna expires in June. Roma’s transfer activity will also depend on player sales. MatÃas Soule is attracting interest from multiple clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga, and La Liga. Any club that arrives at Trigoria with a 40 million euros offer will be able to open negotiations for the Argentine.
The future of Paulo Dybala is also uncertain. If AS Roma qualify for the Champions League, he is likely to stay. Without it, things become more complicated. Dybala would have to accept a significant pay cut if he wants to remain in Rome. Sources close to the player say he would like to stay—it remains to be seen at what cost. In addition to players, the Friedkins and Gasperini are expected to discuss potential sporting directors. Three names are being mentioned: Tony D'Amico from Atalanta, b from SSC Napoli, and Sean Sogliano from Hellas Verona. The first two are under contract and would be difficult to acquire, while Sogliano appears to be a more realistic option—especially as the highly regarded Verona director is ready for a step up in his career.
