Gomes Wanderers: Wolves bring in their fourth Gomes

Two things are certain when it comes to Wolverhampton - they’re going to be relegated to the Championship, and they’ll go down with four players of the same surname

"What a clearance by Gomes, and the ball reaches Gomes around the halfway line... he passes it quickly to Gomes, who links up with Gomes for a superb finish from the edge of the box".

As much as this may sound crazy to you, this could actually happen one of these days during a Wolverhampton Wanderers' game, because Wolves have accumulated FOUR players with the same surname - Gomes!?

The latest recruit, 25-year-old Angel Gomes, joined them a few days ago on a six-month loan from Olympique Marseille with an option to buy. The attacking midfielder of Portuguese origins has collected four senior appearances for England and is probably hoping that this short-term spell could raise his chances of getting into Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad.

He was welcomed at Molineux by three players of his surname - Toti, Joao and Rodrigo.

Toti, 27, was the first one to join Wolves, back in 2020. The Portuguese centre-back born in Guinea‑Bissau has been a mainstay in Wolves' defence for years. He spent time on loan before establishing himself in the first team.

Unlike him, Joao Gomes, 24, quickly became a key midfield figure straight after landing from Flamengo in January 2023. The Brazilian international is known for his energy, tackling and ball progression. After all, they've earned him ten senior Brazil caps since then and praise for his combative style.

Last but not least, the youngest of them, Rodrigo Gomes, joined the team from Braga in July 2024 on a long-term deal. As a wide attacker, the 22-year-old has been used on both flanks and even at wing‑back.

With only eight points to their account so far, and a single victory (3-0 vs. West Ham), Wolves are already saying their farewell to the Premier League, as they'll be relegated to the EFL Championship at the end of the season unless they pull off an unprecedented comeback. If they're going down, at least it will be with a Gomes' flavour.
