The tactician was widely expected to wax lyrical on his players after the game, but he used the moment to point out an issue that was deeply troubling him.

First-half goals from Frank Odhiambo, Sylvester Owino and Ebenezer Adukwaw were enough to secure maximum points for Gor Mahia.

However, despite controlling proceedings in the second half, the 21-time record league champions failed to add another goal, a matter that did not sit well with the Ghanaian tactician.

What was not so good is what we did in the second half. We created a lot of chances, but we must be ambitious. It does not matter that we scored three; when we create chances, we must score more. But we can only be proud of the boys,” said Akonnor.

The former player went on to call for ruthlessness in front of the goal.

After about 20 minutes of the second half, we thought of managing the game, so we brought in fresh legs. We still created chances. It was unfortunate that Assifuah (Ebenezer) as he made a lot of attempts and showed his qualities. He was just unlucky not to score,” he added.

Nevertheless, Gor reached the 40-point mark and opened a four-point gap at the top of the league table, a result that pleased Akonnor.

We were tactically very sound. We played today’s game at ease, and all the things that we wanted to do, we did in the first half. We were a bit superior to the opponent," he said.

To secure the win, Odhiambo and Owino both scored from set pieces.

Akonnor said scoring from set pieces were fruits of their training drills.

It is really exciting because during the week we trained a lot on set pieces and encouraged them. I am happy for Frank because it was his first goal. The team has gained momentum, the spirit is there, the atmosphere is good, and we want to continue with that,” he disclosed.
