Gor Mahia coach Zedekiah Otieno has praised Nairobi United ahead of Sunday’s Mozzart Bet Cup final, emphasizing that both teams are evenly matched and his side should not be considered favorites.

Otieno, appointed interim coach last month following the departure of Sinisa Mihic, will aim to lead K’Ogalo to Cup glory after missing out on the league title, which Kenya Police FC clinched.
In Nairobi United, Gor Mahia face a formidable opponent that has stunned four FKF Premier League teams on their way to the final. The National Super League(NSL) champions defeated Tusker, KCB, Kakamega Homeboyz, and Mara Sugar to book their place in the decisive clash. The winner of Sunday’s final will earn a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
When asked if Gor Mahia were favorites, Otieno swiftly dismissed the idea and commended Nairobi United for their remarkable run to the final in their debut campaign.
“Favorites have never won anything, underdogs sometimes surprise favorites, but for this particular match, we need to give Nairobi United a pat on the back, looking at the teams they have eliminated coming into the final,” he said.
He added that his team would not take the game lightly, underlining the importance of treating Nairobi United with full respect.
“They have eliminated Tusker, former champions Kakamega Homeboyz, and they have eliminated Mara Sugar, and this is a team that deserves to be in the final. We will treat them as such, not as underdogs, but as equals. We are both in the final.”
The former Posta Rangers and KCB coach also stressed the importance of winning the Cup, especially after falling short in the league, one of the team’s main objectives this season.
“We had two objectives when the league started: to win the league and also the Mozzart Bet Cup. The league is gone, and this is the only cup we have left to contest for. We have to come out strongly and with commitment, we have to try and get the cup on Sunday.”
On the team news front, Otieno confirmed that Gor Mahia will be without three players: defenders Ken Onyango and Geoffrey Ochieng, and goalkeeper Giscard Mavoungou.
“Geoffrey had an operation and won’t be available. He is one of the three players out. Our keeper Giscard also had an operation, and Kennedy Onyango broke his leg and underwent an operation. These are the three players who won’t be there for selection.”
