It would be like a fairy-tale story if the legendary defender were to become the owner of the club where he began his career

From cult hero to club owner? Sergio Ramos appears ready to take an ambitious step involving the team closest to his heart.

The former World and European champion is reportedly exploring a takeover of FC Sevilla. As reported by radio station Cadena SER, Ramos has already lodged an official bid and is said to be fronting a private investment consortium with the aim of purchasing the La Liga side in full.

Speculation about a potential change of ownership at Sevilla has been ongoing for some time. Most recently, a US-based investment group was linked with a possible deal, but those talks reportedly collapsed following an internal assessment. The club’s fragile financial position is believed to have been the decisive factor behind the withdrawal.

That situation has seemingly opened the door for Ramos. According to Cadena SER, his proposal is currently viewed as the most credible and serious option on the table.

Ramos’ bond with Sevilla runs deep. He came through the club’s academy and made his senior breakthrough there before securing a 27 million euros move to Real Madrid in 2005, where he enjoyed the most successful chapter of his career. After a two-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain, he returned to Sevilla for the 2023/24 season, further underlining his lasting attachment to the club.

The veteran defender most recently turned out for Mexican side CF Monterrey and has been a free agent since the end of December.

A move into club ownership would not be completely uncharted territory for Ramos. He already holds shares in fourth-tier Spanish club CD San Fernando 1940, located near Seville, and serves on its board. The club is led by president Monchi, Sevilla’s former sporting director, with Ramos’ brother Rene acting as vice-president.
