Homeboyz defender under radar of Greek club

Kakamega Homeboyz centre back Slyvester Owino’s good show in his debut season in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League has won him admiration from a Greece based club second tier club.

The budding defender defied his top flight inexperience to produce top drawer performances in the concluded season which he capped with two goals from the 29 matches he played.

He revealed that his agent Victor Osanya had been approached by an unnamed club from Greece but had not struck a deal or launched talks over his transfer.

Owino who arrived at Homeboyz from National Super League side Vihiga Bullets on a two-year contract proved the perfect partner to George Odiwour at the heart of the defence as the technical bench preferred him ahead of his seniors as well as filled in the void left by Kennedy Onyango who joined Nairobi City Stars last year.

His performance in the league paid off for the first time when coach Stanley Okumbi handed him his maiden call up to the national U23 team for the past edition of the CECAFA tournament held in Ethiopia. He was shortlisted for the Defender of the Season award.

“My agent has told me there is a club in Greece which has enquired over my availability. I understand that their transfer window will be opened in January. At the moment I am gearing up for the preseason with Homeboyz,” he disclosed.

Besides the interest from Europe, the former student at Kisumu Day High School revealed that KCB and Kariobangi Sharks had previously reached out but did not table an offer. Last season, KCB boss was forced to field a midfielder in central defence after injuries rocked the department.

The Greece market is slowly accommodating talents from Kenya after former AFC Leopards holding midfielder Collins Shichenje joined PAOK Thessaloniki while Stars forward Paul Were features for PAE Aigeleo. Former Harambee Starlets forward Esse Akida recently signed for PAOK.
