Kakamega Homeboyz delivered a statement performance to halt their recent slump, cruising to a convincing 2–0 victory over struggling Kariobangi Sharks at Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday.
Goals in either half from skipper Moses Mudavadi and midfielder Hillary Otieno proved decisive as the Kakamega-based outfit bounced back to winning terms after a 2-1 loss to Bandari.

Further, the win saw the Mozzart Bet-sponsored side tighten the gap on league leaders AFC Leopards, while condemning Sharks to another difficult outing that leaves them rooted at the foot of the table.
The match burst into life from the opening whistle, with Homeboyz racing out of the blocks in a high-tempo start that immediately put the visitors on the back foot.
Their early pressure paid dividends just two minutes into the contest when Mudavadi rose highest to power home the opener.
The goal stemmed from a swift counter-attack initiated in midfield by Glen Masava, whose incisive pass released Peter Thiong’o down the flank.
Thiong’o delivered a teasing cross that Mudavadi met with a commanding header, leaving goalkeeper Sebastian Wekesa with no chance.
Buoyed by the early breakthrough, Homeboyz continued to pile on the pressure and nearly doubled their advantage moments later.
Oliver Majaka ghosted into the Sharks’ area and attempted to lob Wekesa, but his effort drifted agonisingly wide with the net gaping.
The hosts remained on the front foot, with defender Potiphar Odhiambo coming close after timing his run perfectly to meet Boniface Onyango’s delivery, only for Wekesa to rush off his line and deny him.
Hillary Otieno also threatened, firing inches wide after latching onto a neatly weighted pass from Majaka.
Kariobangi Sharks, however, showed glimpses of attacking intent.
Humphrey Aroko tested Homeboyz goalkeeper Simon Masaka with a well-struck effort from Mark Vivian Kesa’s delivery, while Keegan Ndemi beat the offside trap before blazing narrowly wide from close range.
As the half wore on, Homeboyz continued to dictate proceedings.
Odhiambo rattled the crossbar with a thunderous 35-yard free kick, while former Sharks man John Omondi saw his long-range strike gathered by Wekesa.
Majaka was again denied late in the half by a timely intervention from Kevin Otiala, as Homeboyz went into the break holding a deserved one-goal lead.
The hosts resumed the second half with the same intensity and were unlucky not to extend their advantage early on when Otieno was denied from point-blank range by Wekesa after being teed up by Mudavadi.
Their persistence was finally rewarded six minutes into the half when Otieno made amends.
Picking out space expertly, he latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Thiong’o before unleashing a fierce strike that proved too powerful for Wekesa, doubling Homeboyz’ lead.
The 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup winners continued to threaten, with Thiong’o volleying narrowly wide from Mudavadi’s cross, while Henry Omollo saw his effort blocked after connecting with Ouma’s delivery
Sharks threw bodies forward in search of a late comeback, spearheaded by Aroko, but Homeboyz’ defensive unit stood firm to see out the contest and secure maximum points.
The victory lifts Kakamega Homeboyz to third place on 27 points, cutting the gap on leaders AFC Leopards to just five points, while Kariobangi Sharks’ struggles deepen, leaving them increasingly entrenched at the bottom of the standings as their season continues to unravel.
