Substitute Emily Adhiambo proved the difference across the two-legged tie after her superb second-half strike in Uganda cancelled out the hosts' opener and handed Kenya a precious away goal.

Kenya had reached the second qualifying round after dismantling Namibia 7-1 on aggregate, while Uganda advanced with an emphatic 6-1 aggregate victory over Zimbabwe.

The Junior Starlets will now face either South Africa or Tanzania in the next round as they continue their quest to return to the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

First Half

The match burst into life from the opening whistle as both sides searched for an early breakthrough.

It was Uganda's Teen Cranes who carved out the first clear chance of the contest following a defensive mix-up inside the Kenyan half.

Immaculate Achen capitalised on a misunderstanding involving Junior Starlets captain Beverline Awuor, stealing possession before racing through on goal.

The forward found herself one-on-one with goalkeeper Mishel Okoyo, but her effort sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

The miss brought a collective sigh of relief from the Kenyan bench and supporters, with several Harambee Starlets players who had turned up at Nyayo Stadium to support the juniors visibly relieved.

Uganda continued to threaten, with Shadia Nabirye proving a constant menace as the visitors piled pressure on the Kenyan defense.

As the game moved past the 10-minute mark, the visitors were firmly in control of the midfield battle. Clad in yellow and black, the Teen Cranes dictated possession and tempo, forcing Kenya to spend long spells chasing the ball.

Kenya's first opportunity arrived just before the quarter-hour mark from a corner kick. A short-corner routine eventually found Faith Boke on the edge of the area, but her low effort lacked the power to trouble Uganda goalkeeper Sharifah Kazito.

Coach Mildred Cheche's charges gradually settled into the contest and attempted several forward moves, though they were repeatedly frustrated by Uganda's disciplined defensive structure.

Uganda almost produced a moment of brilliance in the 20th minute when Justine Ayerango attempted an audacious volley from near the halfway line after spotting Okoye off her line. The effort, however, drifted wide of the target.

That chance reflected the pattern of the game over the next 10 minutes. Uganda remained organised at the back while continuing to probe for openings in Kenya's defense.

Throughout that spell, Mathare United defender Beverline Awuor was repeatedly called upon to snuff out dangerous attacks as the Teen Cranes pushed forward in numbers.

The first booking of the match arrived in the 30th minute when Tabitha Wambui was shown a yellow card following a foul on Martha Nabirye.

Kenya enjoyed their best spell of the half during the closing stages.

Grace Mumo, Mwanahamisi Kombo and Brenda Ochieng began carrying the ball forward with greater purpose, helping the Junior Starlets gain territory and ask more questions of the Ugandan backline.

However, coach Sheryl Ulanda's side remained resolute defensively and continued to repel Kenya's advances.

Uganda nearly found the breakthrough moments before the interval when Justine Ayerango skipped past two Kenyan defenders before attempting to square the ball across the goal.

The delivery appeared destined to create a tap-in opportunity, but it was intercepted by a teammate who had strayed into an offside position.

The Teen Cranes dominated the three minutes of added time and finished the half on the front foot. Still, despite their superiority in large spells of the opening 45 minutes, they were unable to find the goal their performance arguably deserved.

Second Half

Kenya emerged from the break with renewed energy and nearly found the breakthrough within the opening two minutes.

First-leg heroine Emily Adhiambo came close to adding another memorable moment when she connected with a half-volley inside the area, but her effort took a deflection off a Ugandan defender and went behind for a corner.

The contest continued to be fiercely fought, and the referee's intervention was required in the 50th minute when Gradious Maloba became the second player to be booked after bringing down Justine Ayerango.

Moments later, Mwanahalima Kombo attempted to catch Uganda goalkeeper Sharifah Kazito off her line with an ambitious effort from distance, but the ball drifted narrowly over the crossbar.

As the clock ticked beyond the hour mark, neither side had managed to seize control of the tie despite both teams searching relentlessly for the decisive goal.

The tension on the touchline was equally evident. Coaches Mildred Cheche and Sheryl Ulanda rarely sat down, constantly issuing instructions as every minute carried increasing significance.

Uganda's Lydia Namaseruka became the first player from the visitors to enter the referee's notebook after committing a foul on Adhiambo.

Kenya then suffered a setback when Maloba picked up an injury that forced medical personnel to stretcher her off the pitch. Elizabeth Opiyo was introduced as her replacement.

Just three minutes later, Uganda nearly punished Kenya. Shadia Nabirye threaded a brilliant pass into the path of Immaculate Achen, sending her through on goal.

However, Junior Starlets captain Beverline Awuor produced a superb recovery run to dispossess the forward and avert the danger.

The Teen Cranes came agonisingly close again in the 76th minute.

A dangerous free-kick caused problems for goalkeeper Mishel Okoyo, who spilt the ball back into play. Joan Namakula reacted quickest but could only fire her effort wide with the goal at her mercy.

The momentum quickly swung to the other end.

Kombo's corner delivery picked out Beverline Awuor, whose powerful header crashed against the crossbar. The rebound fell kindly for the defender, but her follow-up effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Grace Kawino.

With qualification hanging in the balance, Kenya pushed forward during the closing stages, using both flanks in an attempt to break down Uganda's resilient defense.

Despite a balanced and fiercely contested second half, neither side could find the breakthrough.

When the final whistle sounded, it was Kenya celebrating. Adhiambo's crucial away goal from the first leg ultimately separated the two teams, sending the Junior Starlets into the third round of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifiers.

They will now await the winner between South Africa and Tanzania in the next stage of the competition.
