KCB FC head coach Robert Matano has attributed their first loss in the 2025-2026 Football Kenya Federation Premier League to goalkeeper, Bonphas Munyasa.

The Bankers fell 1-0 to Mathare on Friday at the Kasarani Annex, in what was their second match of the campaign.

Elli Asieche struck the winner in the 43rd minute, a goal that Matano feels Munyasa could have easily saved.

The seasoned midfielder stepped up and curled a free kick from the left side of the area, with Munyasa casually palming the ball into the net rather than over the bar for a corner.

Speaking after the match, a furious Matano listed two occasions that summed up the game.

“We gave out a goal and created chances, but were unable to utilize them. That is all,” Matano told Azam TV.

The former Tusker FC tactician, however, took issue with how his shot stopper gifted Mathare all points for failing to deal with what appeared to be an easy catch.

“It is a big mistake because a person of his caliber, height and experience should not concede such a goal. There was no pressure; no one pushed him and no one was near him.

It was a ball that he ought to have made an easy catch or return to play. It is his mistake and not of the team. You cannot blame anyone else but the goalkeeper,” he added.

Despite the loss, the three-time league winning coach, who is known for his no-nonsense and abrasive style of coaching, backed his team to bounce back in the subsequent fixture.

“We have accepted defeat, retreat and organise ourselves for the next match. However, this might be our last loss because we cannot accept losing again in such a manner. We lost because of our own mistakes,” he stated.

The Bankers, who are yet to win a league title since inception, will face Kariobangi Sharks in their next league match scheduled for Tuesday, 30 September.
