After all top-flight sides safely negotiated their ties on Saturday, another routine day for elite clubs was widely expected.
However, at Ndura Sports Complex, Wisdom Soccer Academy, popularly known as WISA, had very different plans.
Made up largely of school-going students and last year’s candidates, the parent-sponsored side produced a fearless performance to eliminate Mara Sugar 4-3 on post-match penalties after a pulsating 3-3 draw in regular time.
The Millers, under the tutelage of Edward Manoah, appeared to be cruising after a bright start, with captain Drona Langa opening the scoring in the seventh minute.
However, celebrations were short-lived as Edwin Ogire’s charges responded eight minutes later, Kevin Katila leveling matters in the 15th minute.
Both sides held firm to head into the break locked at 1-1, but Mara looked to have taken control after the restart.
Daniel Wafula headed them in front in the 57th minute before new signing Cliff Nyakeya marked his debut with a goal in the 71st minute.
Just when the Millers thought they had booked passage into the next round, WISA mounted a spirited comeback.
Stephen Majanja pulled one back in the 74th minute before Abubakar Ramathan completed the historic fightback with an 80th-minute equaliser.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Nyakeya and Wafula missed their spot-kicks as WISA converted four of their five attempts to seal a famous victory.
It marked the first time the academy has reached the round of 32, having previously exited the competition against Ulinzi Stars and Posta Rangers.
