Kariobangi Sharks head coach William Muluya has challenged his side to rediscover their scoring touch in the final stretch of the season if they are to avoid relegation from the FKF Premier League.

Muluya spoke after Sharks were held to a goalless draw by Bidco United at Wang'uru Stadium in Kirinyaga over the weekend, a result that left them 16th on the table with 30 points as the survival battle continues to take shape.

The former Mozzart Bet Cup champions have struggled for goals in recent weeks, and the coach admitted the team must become more clinical in front of goal during their remaining four fixtures.

Sharks, who have flirted with relegation over the last two seasons, still have matches against already relegated Sofapaka, Nairobi United, Kenya Police FC and Kakamega Homeboyz.

We are not scoring goals, though it is also good for us not to concede. But that does not mean we should be satisfied with keeping clean sheets while failing to score,” said Muluya.

Before the draw against Bidco, Sharks had beaten Murang’a Seal 1-0, before suffering narrow 1-0 defeats to Mara Sugar FC and AFC Leopards, alongside another barren draw against Gor Mahia.

The former Mathare United assistant coach believes the remaining matches will demand greater sharpness in attack if Sharks are to survive.

“It is very important that we score at least six goals in the remaining four matches because that might help us stay in the league.

If that does not work, then we should at least score one goal in every match without conceding as long as we get three points in each game,” he added.

Muluya also reserved praise for goalkeeper Collins Obwalo, who marked his FKF Premier League debut in memorable fashion after saving Clinton Asiago’s 63rd-minute penalty against Bidco.

The game wasn’t easy, and we are happy with the point. I must congratulate the goalkeeper for saving the penalty because we still have 12 points to fight for.

Collins is a goalkeeper who had not tested Premier League action before, and he truly stepped up. That is motivating and encouraging for me to see, and I will continue giving him playing time. Our first-choice goalkeeper was not injured, and we had our reasons for benching him,” added Muluya.
