The former Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) attacker endured a frustrating spell marked by persistent injury setbacks, limiting his involvement and ultimately forcing him out of contention.

During his time with the Homa Bay-based outfit, Otieno struggled to secure playing time, as a niggly knee problem kept him on the sidelines for extended periods.

The injury dates back to his involvement with the Kenya U-20 national team, Rising Stars, during preparations for the CECAFA region CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in November 2024.

What initially appeared manageable soon escalated into a serious concern, significantly affecting his mobility and match fitness.

Despite securing a move to MOFA at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, Otieno’s hopes of reviving his career were quickly dashed.

The pain in his knee proved unbearable, ruling him out for the entire season without a single competitive appearance.

His prolonged absence ultimately saw him deemed surplus to requirements, leading to his release at the end of the campaign.

Undeterred, the forward took a decisive step during the off-season, seeking specialised treatment in Nairobi under the guidance of Bonaventure Odire of Nairobi United.

Through intensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions, Otieno gradually regained strength and confidence in his knee.

“The last season was one of the most difficult periods of my career,” Otieno revealed. “I had to sit out the entire year due to injury, and it eventually led to my exit from the club (MOFA).

But the work done by Bonaventure Odire was exceptional—his professionalism played a huge role in my recovery.”

While regaining fitness, Otieno briefly secured trials at KCB FC. However, in a bold and calculated move, he opted against signing for the Bankers, prioritising regular playing time over prestige.

“I needed to play again after being out for so long,” he explained. “That desire pushed me to join Migori Youth, where I believed I would have a real opportunity to get back on the pitch.”

That decision has since proven inspired. Otieno has rediscovered his scoring touch, emerging as one of the standout performers in the National Super League (NSL).

His resurgence has not only reignited his career but also positioned him among the most in-form forwards in the competition.

Currently, the striker sits second on the scoring charts with 18 goals, just one behind Collins Mwangi of Fortune Sacco, who leads with 19.

With seven matches remaining before the end of the season, the race for the Golden Boot remains finely poised.

Otieno, who recently returned from a brief three-week layoff due to a thigh injury sustained against Mwatate United, remains focused on finishing the campaign strongly.

“It has been a great season for me. I hit form at the right time, and now my main focus is to win the Golden Boot before the season ends,” he added.
