NSL: Relegation dogfight key agenda in Saturday action

Three matches are lined up for Saturday afternoon as the National Super League enters Round 29 this weekend.

While focus in recent weeks has shifted to the revolving door at the top: where all of Mathare United, Mara Sugar and Naivas are separated by a point at the top of the table, Saturday will lack that type of juice, with the heavyweights set to feature on Sunday.

Instead, attention will be near the bottom, with all of Gusii, Mombasa Elite and Kajiado looking to avoid the drop.

Gusii vs Rainbow

18th placed Gusii will, in the day’s second match at Cardinal Otunga High School, seek to end their recent run of poor results when they welcome seventh placed Rainbow FC, off a big win over Nairobi United last week.

Gusii have failed to score in their last five games - all defeats - and carry with them the prospect of jumping out of the relegation zone with a win.

Rainbow, who won 3-1 in the reverse fixture in January, can move into the top six with three points.

All to play for from 1300 EAT.

Nairobi United vs Kajiado FC

In a game that could carry varying implications on both ends of the table, promotion-seeking Nairobi United welcome 17th placed Kajiado at Mpesa Foundation Grounds in the day’s 1100 EAT early kickoff match.

Having, earlier this season, occupied a place within the top three, a loss and a draw for Naibois in their last two fixtures has dealt them a big blow as they now stare at a five-point gap between themselves and third-placed Naivas.

A win over a side with the joint-lowest win total this season could come in handy, but so will it be for Kajiado, who are coming off a 1-0 win over Migori and could further separate themselves from the relegation zone that they are only two points clear of.

Mombasa Elite vs MCF FC

The last fixture of the afternoon will see 14th placed MCF take on 16th placed Mombasa Elite at Serani Sports Club in Mombasa from 1500 EAT.

MCF, last weekend, secured a 4-1 rout over Vihiga to make it four wins in their last six matches and will be looking to complete a season double over Elite after overpowering them 1-0 in the reverse fixture in January.

Elite, who are in their third stretch of two consecutive losses since February, are looking behind their shoulders being just a win above 18th placed Silibwet, who occupy the last relegation spot.

A win for the hosts will prove key.
