Oalo revels in new leadership role at City Stars

Dennis Oalo captained Simba Wa Nairobi in a recent match

Former National Super League (NSL) top scorer Dennis Oalo led youthful Nairobi City Stars team to pick a point in round two of the FKF Premier League on Sunday 3 September, and one for which they are grateful. Simba wa Nairobi had failed to hold onto a lead that allowed Bidco United also make away with a point.

Oalo, once a leading scorer for NSL side Kisumu All Stars, captained City Stars on Sunday afternoon and is thrilled with the honour.

‘’It’s always a privilege to lead, especially in the top flight. Ours is a relatively new team with plenty of first timers in the Premier League. Having myself played a couple of seasons here, I intend to guide them,’’ says the forward.

Andrew Kisilu had struck first for City Stars in the 56th minute after a barren opening half but hosts Bidco hit back just ten minutes later, Samuel Ndung’u on the end of the equaliser. Having also drawn their match day one contest, a barren home stalemate against Muhoroni Youth, Oalo believes they are results that can be built on.

‘’One positive thing is that we haven’t lost a match and that is encouraging. Should a first win come soon, I’m sure we will be wheels up. The first matches are always the trickiest to play, teams have been off-season and you barely know what to expect,’’ continues Oalo.

The Nicholas Muyoti-coached side is one of the teams in the league that experienced team overhaul with such fresh talents as Abala Gilbert, Brian Mzee and Wycliffe Omondi earning their top flight debuts on match day one.

Brian Mzee bagged the man of the match from yesterday’s draw after a solid midfield shift against Bidco. Such performances, Oalo says, spell a lot of hope for the team. Despite having experienced players like Calvins Masawa, Edwin Mujolwe, Sosthenes Idah, the younger ones are already proving themselves with just two matches.

‘’We are already proud of them. The coach is confident in their abilities and there’s a lot they can achieve this season. For some of us who have been here for a while, we can only push them to the best of their abilities,’’ concludes Oalo.

City Stars, on two points, stay at the heart of the table in the 11th position. They’ll be on the road next against defending champions Gor Mahia on Sunday 17th.
