Regragui's two match suspension overturned in appeal decision

Sanctions placed on Morocco head coach Walid Regragui in the aftermath of investigations following post-match incidents during the CAF Africa Cup of Nations fixture between Morocco and Democratic Republic of Congo have been dropped.

As per a Sunday 28 communication, The CAF Appeal Board met following an appeal by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) regarding the outcome of the CAF Disciplinary Board on 22 January 2024, announcing a number of decisions among them setting aside Regragui’s four-match suspension - two of which were suspended for a period of one year.

Other decisions made include setting aside a fine of 5,000 US Dollars imposed on the 48 year old head coach, with a fine of 20,000 US Dollars imposed on both Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football and Fédération Congolaise de Football Association.

The measures come after Regragui had a clash on January 21 with DR Congo defender Chancel Mbemba after the full time whistle in a 1-1 draw.

Furthermore, CAF Appeal Board confirmed CAF Disciplinary Board’s decision to impose a fine of 10,000 US Dollars (5,000 US Dollars of which is suspended) on the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football for the use of smoke bombs by its supporters during the match.

The decision thus means Regragui will be available in Morocco’s last 16 match against South Africa on Tuesday 30 January, after missing out on his side’s final Group E fixture, in which they secured a 1-0 win over Zambia.
