The 2025 tournament will be the first to feature 32 teams, up from the current 24-nation format

Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers draw set to take place on Tuesday 20 February 2024, in Cairo, Egypt, at 3 PM EAT, it has now emerged that Africa’s premier competition will be held in Morocco during the summer.

As per respected Morocco journalist Hanif Ben Berkane the decision was made after months of discussions between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation, with FIFA also playing a role in mediating the agreement.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to officially announce the new changes for the tournament which will take place from July 23 to August 21.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in January and February 2025, but was postponed due to concerns about the weather conditions in Morocco during that time of year.

The Country in the Horn of Africa will have the privilege of hosting the elite competition on the back of the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in the USA between June 15 and July 13.

Unlike the 2021 and 2023 tournaments, which were held in January and February respectively in Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire due to the wet climate in West African countries during June and July, this follows the precedent set by the 2019 tournament in Egypt.

The 2025 tournament will be the first to feature 32 teams, up from the current 24-nation format.

With the draw set for Tuesday, eight lowest-ranked African countries will compete for a place in the next round of qualification with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the continental showpiece.
