Nemanja Gudelj was the only one to miss his spot-kick

Manchester City won the UEFA Super Cup on penalties after they played out a 1-1 draw with Sevilla. Youssef En-Nesyri and Cole Palmer were the scorers over the 90 minutes, and Nemanja Gudelj tasted bitterness when he missed the last penalty of the shoot-out to hand City the trophy.

UEFA Champions League holders Manchester City and UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla met at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens to officially start the 2023/24 season of European club football, and the game was an exciting affair, offering plenty of chances, attacks, and nice moves and displays of skill.

Youssef En-Nesyri showed why he's considered one of the finest centre-forwards in the world today. He rose majestically between Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol to steer a Marcos Acuna cross past Ederson. Against the run of play, Jose Luis Mendilibar's team was ahead midway through the first half.

Los Nervionenses then decided to wait for their chance to mount a counter-attack, and they got their chance when Lucas Ocampos escaped down the left and played a perfect low pass into En-Nesyri's path. The Moroccan had an ideal chance one-on-one, but his shot was disappointing - straight at Ederson. It was a big moment in the game which turned the momentum away from the Spanish team.

When all big stars failed, young Palmer excelled. The 21-year-old starlet snuck up to the far post and sent a looping header across Bonou and into the far corner, making it 1-1.

From that moment on, it was all City. Pep Guardiola's team attacked with all their power, with Jack Grealish and Cole Palmer marauding down the wings and searching for openings.

Several Sevilla players looked exhausted as last season's Treble winners tightened the noose around their box. Still, the Spanish team had one last attempt to attack and avoid a penalty shoot-out.

Nathan Ake nearly won the game in added time, but his header bounced off the ground and just cleared the crossbar.

Mendilibar made a couple more changes as the added time passed and led the game to penalties.
