The former Nairobi City Stars player played the full 90 minutes to put the Polish champions on the brink of history

Kenya international Timothy Ouma is one step from making a major milestone in his career after helping his side Lech Poznań inch closer to UEFA Champions League qualification.

Ouma, who is on loan at the Polish giants from Czech outfit Slavia Prague, made his second full start for Poznań on Wednesday, 30 July, as they booked their place in the third qualifying round of the premier European football championship.

The new number 6 played the full 90 minutes of Poznań’s routine 1-0 victory over Breiðablik at Kópavogsvöllur, wrapping a comprehensive 8-1 win on aggregate.

Swedish striker Mikael Ishak got the only goal of the game at the half-hour mark, sending them on their way to crunch ties against Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday, 5 and 12 August.

An aggregate win for the Polish champions will mark a new career high for the former Nairobi City Stars midfielder, as he will join a unique class of Kenyan players to play in the Champions League, joining McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama.

Regardless of the result, however, Poznań and Ouma are assured of European football, with a loss sending them down to the UEFA Europa League, which Ouma featured in during his time at Swedish club Elfsborg.

The third qualifying round of the Champions League has been a major hurdle for the Polish club in the previous years, as they have lost there in all their last three attempts.

Progress to the main finals will be the first time they will be making it through to the main competition.

Maina on target

Elsewhere in Siegburg, Germany, Harambee Stars prospect Linton Maina was on target as FC Koln hammered home side Siegburger 7-0 in a friendly on Wednesday, 30 July.

The 26-year-old found the back of the net after nine minutes to give Koln the lead, and send the visitors on their way to their third win in preseason.

The Billy Goats are preparing for a big season in the Bundesliga next season.

In Japan, Kenya's vice-captain Joseph Okumu was missing in action as his side Stade Reims lost 2-1 to Kashiwa Reysol at the Kashiwa Hitachi Stadium.
