The 33-year-old has now had one game involvement in the last four matches

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama was an unused substitute as his club, CF Montreal, boosted their chances of progressing through to the knockout phase of the 2024 Leagues Cup with a 3-2 victory over Atlético de San Luis at the Stade Saputo on Wednesday morning.

Wanyama, 33, had over the weekend played 46 minutes in a return to the Major League Soccer (MLS) side, but was rested on Wednesday against their Mexican opponents.

It was Montreal who took the early initiative in the Group M contest as Duke Bryce picked out Tom Pearce in the 17th minute for the opener in his first start for the club.

Pearce was not finished, as just 10 minutes later, he received the ball wide and sent a perfect cross to Matias Coccaro, who headed home the Montreal’s second goal.

San Luis began the second half with far more aggression in pursuit of getting back into the game and certainly did so in the 77th minute when Franck Boli converted from the spot following Joel Waterman's foul inside the box.

The hosts however restored their two-goal cushion with eight minutes left to play through Sunusi Ibrahim, and eventually saw out the win despite Jurgen Damm scoring a last-minute consolation.

The win puts Montreal in a good position to progress to the next round of the tournament, where they are slated to face either Philadelphia Union, Charlotte FC or Cruz Azul.
