In the 265th edition of arguably the greatest derby in football, Boca Juniors beat River Plate (2-0) for the first time in three years in front of over 57,000 ecstatic fans at the legendary Bombonera

Boca Juniors' days of suffering seem to be over! The Genoese were winless in league games against the biggest rivals since September 2022, but yesterday their time finally came, and River Plate's run was ended.

Even though the Millionaires invested more than $70 million - nomen est omen, isn't it? - and their boss Marcelo Gallardo brought them as many as 12 trophies in the last six years, but it helped them little against Boca's kids, which brushed them aside at La Bombonera - 2-0.

Despite the home crew's dominance throughout the first half, the opener came only in added time when Exequiel Zeballos broke the deadlock, scoring off a rebound after Franco Armani's initial save, and hinted that he'd be the leading figure of Boca's grand victory.

Two minutes into the second half, the 23-year-old recorded an assist, and the ruthless Miguel Merentiel did what he does best, doubling Claudio Ubeda's team lead and sealing the deal.

Had it not been for VAR, which ruled out another Uruguayan's goal and Armani, who made several terrific stops, River's embarrassment would have been even greater.

One round before the end of the league phase of the Argentinian Clausura, Boca top their group, while Gallardo's crew is only sixth in its, recording four defeats in the previous five matches. Moreover, the Genoese secured their spot in the Copa Libertadores after a two-year absence. On the other hand, the Millionaires will be on edge until the end.
