Contract talks may be at a standstill, but the Hungarian star delivers when it matters most
Dominik Szoboszlai isn't losing sleep over his contract situation. The Liverpool midfielder remains calm despite stalled talks over a new deal, choosing instead to focus on what lies directly ahead.
The Hungarian international, under contract until 2028, has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise demanding season, delivering 12 goals and nine assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.
Yet when asked about his future after the 2-1 derby win over Everton, Szoboszlai offered little in the way of updates.
"There's been no real progress, so I can't say anything new," he admitted. "We still have games to play, and that's where my focus is. I'm ready every day, every week - then we'll see what happens."
While negotiations may be out of his hands for now, his feelings about the club are clear.
"Of course, I see myself here long-term. I love being here, I love the fans, and my family is happy. I'm completely relaxed."
And on the pitch, he continues to deliver. It was Szoboszlai's corner deep into stoppage time that found captain Virgil van Dijk, whose towering header sealed a dramatic derby victory. The decisive moment came at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, sparking wild celebrations and keeping Liverpool firmly in control of their Champions League push.
The win not only completed a league double over Everton, but also opened up a seven-point gap to sixth-placed Chelsea - a crucial cushion in the race for a top-four finish.
"It felt amazing," Szoboszlai said. "We worked on set-pieces the day before. I just put the ball into a good area and hoped Virgil or Ibou would get on the end of it."
A last-gasp derby winner is about as dramatic as it gets, but Szoboszlai is keeping things grounded.
"We're happy, of course, for ourselves and for the fans, because we know what it means. But we have to stay focused. A win lifts the mood, but there's still a lot of work ahead."
Next up for Liverpool: a clash with Crystal Palace and another step in what remains a tightly contested race for the Champions League.
