According to the BBC, the Cityzens are withdrawing from the race. Bayern Munich are the favourites to sign the prolific midfielder
Ten days ago, German journalist and football transfer expert Christian Falk broke the news that Florian Wirtz will be leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of this season to join Bayern Munich.
As per Falk, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder is eager to join the Bavarians, and the Allianz Arena outfit shares the same desire with the player.
Therefore, today's BBC revelation that Manchester City are out of the race for Wirtz is not surprising.
As BBC Sport reports, it is estimated that "an agreement to sign Wirtz would represent the biggest deal in City's history", potentially reaching as much as E300m inclusive of transfer fees and wages.
"While there is acknowledgement that Wirtz is among the leading young talents in European football and has been linked with Bayern Munich and Liverpool, City are concerned the cost of the deal is over-inflated," reports BBC.
This means Wirtz won't be Kevin de Bruyne's successor after all, and the Premier League giants will continue their search for the team's new playmaker, who would join Rodri and Phil Foden in the already star-studded midfield.
