West Ham want the former Manchester United captain, but are losing patience
The proposed $33 million transfer of Harry Maguire to West Ham has fallen through as the London club grew impatient waiting for the defender to arrange his departure from Manchester United. While there's a possibility that the deal could be revived, it's not progressing at the moment.
West Ham have become frustrated due to the delay and are now exploring other options for their central defence. Maguire had agreed on personal terms with David Moyes' club, but the club has been awaiting his agreement on a compensation arrangement with United.
With Maguire all but frozen out at Old Trafford, some would expect him to accept just about any offer just to remain playing in the Premier League, but not Harry. It looks like he doesn't want to give up on a single penny Manchester United are supposed to pay him before moving.
The 30-year-old saw a significant salary increase after Manchester United qualified for the Champions League, which means he would earn notably less at West Ham. He is reportedly seeking around $8.9 million in order to leave Old Trafford. The Red Devils had aimed to raise funds by selling Maguire, who had fallen out of favour under Erik Ten Hag. Despite having two years left on his contract, the guy who cost $100 million only started eight Premier League matches last season. Gareth Southgate cautioned him that his spot in the England team could be at risk if he continues to spend time on the bench.
A move to West Ham would grant Maguire the opportunity for regular playing time and enhance his chances of starting for England in Euro 2024. Moyes has been pushing for the transfer to proceed, although some sources within the club are less convinced about acquiring Maguire. United accepted a $38 million bid from West Ham last week.

Although there was potential for Maguire to become Moyes' captain, the lack of clarity has raised concerns at West Ham. It appears that the former Leicester player might be hesitating and uncertain about the move. Additionally, there's a sentiment within the recruitment department that West Ham could benefit from a quicker centre-back. Interest exists in Bayer Leverkusen's pair, 27-year-old German international Jonathan Tah and Ivorian youngster Odilon Kossounou.
West Ham will have a busy ending to the transfer window and are prepared for Manchester City to make a renewed offer for Lucas Paqueta. The Brazilian midfielder has a $108 million release clause set to become active in July 2024 and is unsettled, expressing a desire to join Pep Guardiola's team. West Ham are watching Ghanaian playmaker Mohammed Kudus from Ajax and Cole Palmer from Manchester City as potential replacements.
