The next Bruno? Sporting's star Pedro Goncalves extends contract with the Lions and will cost $92 million

One of Europe's most talented wingers Pedro Goncalves extended his contract with Sporting Clube de Portugal, the reigning Liga Portugal champions. The 23-year-old extended the contract until 2026, one more year than the current one, and will have the highest termination clause in the squad, with $92 million.

The winger, who arrived to Jose Alvalade Stadium just over a year ago and drew a lot of attention with his fine displays. The club was desperate to renew his contract and ensure good profit in case a club from a bigger league comes knocking with an offer.

Goncalves joined the club from Famalicao for a fee of $7.15 million last August and is already looking to bring a lot of money to the club after recent sales of Wendel to Zenit for $22.33 million, Marcos Acuna to Sevilla for $12.38 and, of course, last January's deal that saw Bruno Fernandes go to Manchester United for $70 million.

"The feeling is one of pride and certainty of a job well done last season. The renewal is a kind of extra confidence that the Club gives me, but it also means that I have to give even more and continue to make Sporting CP, the fans and my family proud. I have to keep working every day and do my best for the club."

After an unforgettable debut season, in which he won the League Cup and the National Championship, having been the top scorer in the League with 23 goals in 32 games, Pedro says that his greatest characteristic “is to leave everything on the field”.

"I know my abilities and I'm very happy for the great season I've had. I don't focus on the number of goals or assists. What I like is playing and giving everything on the field and I hope that this is my brand image. My objective is to work every day for the team and for the coach and have a season equal to or better than last year."

It looks like only a matter of time before Goncalves becomes a star for one of Europe's biggest clubs. But one thing is certain – Sporting won't let him leave on a cheap.
