New character in the story - Spurs executives are after Gennaro Gattuso. Fans are furious about the choice, to say the least.
If it wasn't frustrating enough for Spurs fans few weeks ago when: Bayern Munich-bound Julian Nagelsmann, Leicester's Brendan Rodgers and Ajax's Erik Ten Hag all proved out of reach; Paris Saint-Germain activated a one-year extension with Mauricio Pochettino; and the talks with former Chelsea and Inter Milan gaffer Antonio Conte broke down - it sure is now.
Media reported Tottenham were painfully close to signing Paulo Fonseca as their new manager, however, that project also failed. And not only that - Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy now turned to an option almost no one would think of - Gennaro Gattuso.
After the shocking Fonseca U-turn, Jose Mourinho will not see his countryman become a permanent successor in the dug-outs of the new White Hart Lane but possibly the fiery Italian.
To make it even more interesting - just 23 days ago, Gattuso was appointed new Fiorentina head coach.
Reportedly, ex-Roma tactician Fonseca began discussions with Tottenham's new managing director of football Fabio Paritici about the make-up of his coaching staff and their plans for the squad.
However, this saga took yet another twist and Spurs walked away from Fonseca.
It was mentioned that the reasons for such turn of events were financial but Spurs insist money was not crucial for the decision - the club's hierarchy simply settled for the club to go in a different direction.
Even when he was managing director at Juventus, Paritici showed interest in Gattuso. Idea was for 'Rino' Gattuso to be contacted if the Turin club fails to bring back Massimiliano Allegri.
The former Italy midfielder, famous for his aggressive style of play during his footballing days, was set to spend this season as Fiorentina manager since he joined them last month after leaving Napoli.
However, after just 23 days, he left Fiorentina on Thursday following a dispute with his new club over transfer plans connected to his agent Jorge Mendes.
Now, the 43 year-old has become the latest to emerge as a leading target for the job in Spurs's roller-coaster search since Mourinho's exit two months ago.
So far, Gattuso has managed Swiss side Sion, Greek OFI Crete and Italian clubs of Palermo, Pisa and Milan.
The problem is - Spurs supporters do not want Gattuso leading the team. After hearing what the plan was, they even trended a #NoToGattuso campaign on social media which is leading to another failure in Tottenham's search for the new head coach.
