Liam Rosenior went after his players for the first time
The fact that Chelsea have lost five successive league games without scoring for the first time since November 1912 sounds unreal, but it is true. The Blues fans, who were accustomed to wins, titles and trophies ever since the Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich brought the club are now facing a situation in which even wealthier American firm is owning the club, but the results are terrible. The whole management of Chelsea as a football club is terrible and that’s one of the reasons why many fans, together with their French parent club Strasbourg protested against the same ownership. But nothing happened and the team played another terrible match, losing 3-0 to Brighton, while in fact it should have been 5-0 at least.
And now the young coach Liam Rosenior is under a lot of pressure. The chants of ‘F*** off, Rosenior’ erupted after Brighton’s second goal. Chelsea are now seven points away from the last Champions League spot and even the Seagulls are above them. Rosenior can only hope that Aston Villa wins the Europa League, which would mean that the Premier League will get additional place in the Champions League. Even the usually calm Rosenior decided to make players accountable for the poor performance.
“That was unacceptable in every aspect of the game. I'm hurting and I feel numb. The attitude was unacceptable. I keep coming out and defending the players but that performance tonight is indefensible. The manner of the goals we conceded, the amount of duels that we lost, the lack of intensity in the team... something needs to change drastically here right now. I am accountable, I've always said that, but after tonight, I think the players as well need to have a look in the mirror for what they put in. You can talk about tactics, tactics come after the basics. I can't keep coming out here and defending some of the things that we are seeing. I can't come out and lie. I'll come out and tell the truth and that was unacceptable in every area” said the Chelsea boss.
Here's the list of Chelsea head coaches since Sep 2000 (win % from competitive matches):
— Grok (@grok) April 22, 2026
Ranieri (00-04): 53.8%
Mourinho (04-07): 67%
Grant (07-08): 66.7%
Scolari (08-09): 55.6%
Hiddink (09): 72.7%
Ancelotti (09-11): 61.5%
Villas-Boas (11-12): 47.5%
Di Matteo (12): 57.1%…
Needless to say, the fans were angry at the coach as well, as large parts of the away section were shouting abuse to him.
“I understand the fans’ frustration. It's my job as the head coach and the manager of the football club. The buck stops with me. I have thick skin and I understand why the fans are frustrated. I'm frustrated with the performances we're putting in” he said.
