Training for just a day and getting a point away thrills Vihiga

The relegation threatened outfit was playing not to lose the away fixture.

Vihiga United assistant coach Samuel Otieno has expressed satisfaction with the point gained from their goalless draw against Mathare United on Sunday.

Otieno revealed that a point is all what they had hit the road for as the unfit players had converged for a day ahead of the match.

The tactician who manned the touchline following the exit of Sammy Okoth hailed his charges for containing Mathare and achieving the objective of the day despite playing away and arriving in Nairobi on match day.

Okoth threw in the towel on the eve of the match under unclear circumstances leaving Otieno to hold brief for Mike Mururi who was immediately re-appointed to replace him.

Mururi who travelled with the team sat on the bench but it Otieno whom they had previously worked with at Soy United and Chemelil Sugar who was calling the shots.

Our game plan was to force a draw by all means and the boys executed it well. We were not ready for the match as had only trained for a day ahead of the match. The match gave us a clear picture of what we need to work on going forward. The players are rusty after staying out of action for almost two months. Improving their fitness levels is something we will concentrate on before our next match. Besides working on the fitness levels, we are aware of where the team sits on the log and hence we have to come up with a winning formula to ease the fears of returning to the second tier,” he stated.

Vihiga sit third from bottom with twelve points, collected from sixteen rounds.

They will host defending champions Gor Mahia on Wednesday next week at the Mumias Sports complex.
