The Kenyan international had only recently resumed training following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but picked up a calf problem after completing just one full session with his teammates.

Saints manager Stephen Robinson confirmed the setback and revealed the club is awaiting scan results to determine the extent of the damage.

Jonah broke down with a calf injury. He is only trained one day fully and then pulled up with his calf, so we have to get a scan to see what we are dealing with,” Robinson said.

If it is a short-term thing, brilliant. We just hope it is nothing more sinister.”

Subsequent scans delivered disappointing news, with Robinson later confirming the striker will be sidelined for at least a couple of months due to a tendon injury.

Ayunga, who scored twice against Celtic F.C. at Hampden earlier in the season, had initially been ruled out for at least two months at the start of the year after going off injured in a defeat to Rangers

The injury compounds St Mirren’s woes as they attempt to pull clear of the Scottish Premiership drop zone.

Defender Malik Dijksteel is also set to miss the remainder of the season after tearing his groin off the bone, an injury that will likely require surgery.

On a positive note, captain Mark O'Hara and midfielder Keanu Baccus have returned to training after long-term injuries.

O’Hara made a second-half appearance in the 2-0 defeat to Hibernian F.C. at Easter Road, with Robinson optimistic about his influence in the coming weeks.

“I see Mark coming on and the first thing he does is play a pass in behind and we get a corner from it,” said Robinson.

Keanu is training. He is got the okay to open his legs and sprint properly, which is a problem with tendon injuries. The Motherwell game might come a little bit early for him.”

Despite the mounting injury list, Robinson remains defiant.

I believe we have got players we can put on the pitch in the coming weeks that will certainly help the situation. We will put a team out there that is going to battle and scrap and fight. When we have those bodies back, they epitomise what we’re about.
